Studio History

The studio was launched by resident artist Edward Ash in 1996, when the opportunity to rent a small building at a working windmill in rural Lincolnshire became available. He was encouraged by the windmill owners, friends of the family, to 'give it a try', initially at weekends. It soon became a full time venture! This was followed by a move in 1998 to Steep Hill in the historic 'Up-Hill' area of Lincoln, where the studio and gallery remains.

Eddie has enjoyed aviation "ever since he can remember". As a child, his father would occasionally take him into 'Saunders Roe' on the Isle of Wight, to look at the aircraft under construction - the spark was lit! At thirteen Eddie joined the 'Air Training Corp' (A.T.C.), winning the accolade 'Cadet of the Year'. In 1966 he joined the Royal Air Force, where he served in Air Traffic Control.

Although aviation was an abiding interest, the world of art was an unknown! It was pure 'serendipity', one Christmas, Shirley, Eddies wife, bought him a small watercolour set to "help him relax after work". He wasn't very struck by the idea, at the time he didn't even paint window frames! Within four years he was painting for a living. His first competition was an International event, having two pieces of work accepted by the 'American Society of Aviation Artists'. This was a first.

Since then, the world famous 'Red Arrows' have selected his work to represent their thirty eighth season, and the Fleet Air Arm have commissioned him to produce a painting to commemorate the de-commissioning of their Sea Harriers Squadron.
